The Mini-B is a little prototype dwelling intended to demonstrate that construction to the Passive House standard is achievable and affordable in the U.S. Pacific Northwest, and will result in comfortable, energy efficient homes.

The Passive House standard (Passivhaus in German) is a voluntary standard for energy efficient buildings developed by German and Swedish researchers. As described by the International Passive House Association:

A Passive House combines energy consumption and high-level comfort. Passive components like thermal windows, insulation and heat recovery are the elements that are key. Because it uses itself to heat, A passive house does not have to be heated actively. The warmth stays inside.

Passive heat identifies passive solar heat gain in addition to the heat.
